Welcome. We are SCBWI CAROLINAS...
It is February 1, 2012, the first day of the second month of the year. By now, your holiday decorations are a distant memory, you are well into working on that manuscript or illustration, you've submitted to the editors/agents who were at the conference, and you've finally remembered to write 2012 as the date. We've added a number of new members since the Fall Conference. And, we wanted to share information about SCBWI and SCBWI Carolinas.
- When you join SCBWI at the main office in LA, you are a member. There are no additional dues or fees, except for actual events.
For your membership you receive the SCBWI Bimonthly Bulletin, Pen & Palette, the quarterly regional publication of the Carolinas, access to market data on line. Sign in at www.scbwi.org for participation in the SCBWI Discussion boards as well as the regional Yahoo List, SCBWI C, and the lowest tuition price for SCBWI events. You can find archived issues at http://scbwicarolinas.org/scbwi-carolinas/pen-palette.html

- SCBWI is divided geographically by region. Sometimes, we forget and use the region as the membership designation.
What we are is, SCBWI for those members who reside in the Carolinas. By separating into regions, we enable each area of the country, the world actually, to provide local events for members where they can participate in workshop sessions on writing, illustrating, PB/MG/YA/NF, marketing, promotion and what ever else we can determine would be of benefit to our members regarding the children's publishing industry. Most regions have their own website, separate and distinct from the main site. We are currently in the process of updating our website, [Yes. Again!] continually working to make it as responsive as we can to your needs.
- In this region we have a free event, only for those members of SCBWI who live in the Carolinas. Click 3rd Annual SCBWI C Art and Writing Contest for the Official Rules. Submit one manuscript, and/or one illustration between February 1 and February 29, 2012.
In turn, each submission receives a written check list from an editor at a major publishing house. This year in the Writing Contest the Judges are: Kate Fletcher, Editor, Candlwick Press, Picture Book Category Reka Simonsen, Executive Editor and Adah Nuchi, Editor, Harcourt Children's Books, Novels Category Miriam Frank, Editor, Marshall Cavendish, Non-Fiction Category The Art Contest will be judged by Katrina Damkoehler, Assistant Art Director, Sterling Children’s Books & Splinter
- SCBWI holds two main international conferences, one in New York City in late January, and one in Los Angeles in early August. To better understand SCBWI, you may want to check out Membership Benefits Scroll down to Membership Benefits and Levels of Membership. This is a 40 year old professional organization and the only one dedicated to children's publishing.
The recent NYC MidWinter Conference was reviewed in Publisher's Weekly.
- It is our goal to provide opportunities for information and for professional contact. Due to the nature of the event we must impose limits. We will continue to work to bring high-caliber professional talent to the Carolinas for our members. The downside is, the talent is limited and we are now an international organization of 25,000 members. The competition is stiff.
Bonnie and I look forward to seeing your submissions to the Art and Writing Contest. If you have any questions or comments you can contact Teresa Fannin @
